How to Use Google My Business to Get More Website Traffic and Generate Sales

Last Updated on June 1, 2021 by Amy Geldean

You might have the best product or service in the San Diego area, but if your business can’t be found in Google, then you’ll never be able to compete.

If you’re not already using Google My Business, then you’re missing out on sales.

Did you know a whopping 88% of consumers who use local searches end up calling or visiting that business within 24 hours of finding them online? Still, it’s estimated that over half of local businesses completely ignore this completely free marketing tool! You don’t want to be part of that statistic, and to help you escape that fate, we’ve created this guide to help you learn how to use the latest Google My Business features to drive more traffic to your business.

Google My Business descriptions are back!

While Google had previously removed my business descriptions, now they’re back! That’s good news for local business owners because while short, these descriptions allow you to sell every aspect of your business. What’s even better is that they allow you to include tons of long-tail keywords that will help you get found in listings.

How can you use this feature for your business?

How do you write a good Google My Business description? If you were a mobile repair shop in San Diego, then you might do something like this.

“Phone Depot can service any phone make or model. We can repair, replace or service devices with broken screens, water damage, broken buttons, and bad batteries. We also carry a huge selection of new and refurbished devices, cases, headphones, and screen protectors. Visit our San Diego location to have your device repaired in as little as two days. Initial diagnostics at no charge!”

This description does a lot for a local business. It tells customers exactly what services that they can get there, and it also creates lots of long tail keyword opportunities. This type of description can be applied to any industry, business or service, and it goes a long way in helping you with your listings. Being as descriptive as possible is also great for getting your site found in voice search! More and more people are using this key feature, and it can be a goldmine for your business.

Upload videos to showcase your products or service

Online video engagement has skyrocketed in recent years, and consumers are far more likely to make a purchase if a video is involved in the decision-making process. If you’re selling a product, then a video is a far superior method to display quality or features that images just can’t capture. However, even if you’re a service provider, you can still use videos to sell yourself and make it clear to potential customers that you’re the right choice. Plus, not many businesses are utilizing Google My Business videos yet, and that gives you a great chance to stand out.

How can you use this feature for your business?

If you’re a service provider such as a mechanic or HVAC technician, then a good place to start would be creating a video that talks about your experience and services. You could even use videos to display testimonials from happy customers. Nobody wants to hire a bad mechanic, use videos to tell potential customers why you’re better than the rest.

For those that own retail businesses, restaurants, or hotels, videos are also a great opportunity to showcase your offerings, conduct a tour of your facilities or highlight your best features for potential customers to see.

For businesses that work individually with people such as therapists, attorneys, doctors videos are especially important. A video helps a person emotionally relate in a way pictures and text cannot. In fact, we created a complete guide outlining how therapists can use video to build their practice.

Engage potential customers with Questions and Answers

If you’re unfamiliar with Q&A sites like Quora, then you should know that online businesses have been using these sites to their advantage for years. Not only do these questions provide tons of long tail search content which can help your business to be found, but it also provides you with the ability to engage directly with potential customers.

How can you use this feature for your business?

The great thing about this feature is that most of the work will be done for you. Customers can leave questions on your page, and you can answer them. This creates a valuable FAQ of your services. It can even address some things you might have forgotten about, or it can even help you to identify products or services that you should be offering but aren’t! For example, if several customers ask if your restaurant provides catering and you have to turn them away, maybe you should start! Taking the time to answer customer questions also shows that you care, and it makes people who are searching for a business like yours feel confident in their decision.

Don’t forget that you can add your own questions and answers too. Some popular ones could include things like your hours of operation, if you have service fees or information about the types of services that you currently offer.

Use Posts to keep your consumers in the loop!

Google has recently introduced something really cool for business listings called posts. This cool feature allows you to interact with people who land on your business page, and you can even incentivize them to give your business a call with special offers or a call to action! While it’s easy enough to describe your service and just insert a “learn more button”, there’s a lot more that you can do here than that. It takes a lot to stand out as a small business now, and taking advantage of the posts feature is a great way to sway new customers your way with a discount or by putting your best products on display.

However, even if you don’t really want to do an offer or call to action, you can still use posts to keep consumers in the loop about what’s going on with your business. Posts give you an opportunity to let potential customers know about special events, new products, and promotions that can take them from hitting the back button to calling you for a reservation or appointment.

How can you use this feature for your business?

Imagine that someone has typed in “Pizza places in Carlsbad”. A couple of businesses pop up, and the searcher begins to compare them. However, your business listing is currently offering users a coupon for placing their first order. Your new customer is hooked, and they happily place an order over the phone using your coupon code rather than going with a competitor. This strategy can be applied to nearly any business, and it’s a good start to using posts with Google My Business, but don’t stop there.

Have a more visual business like an event venue? Try using the posts feature to show off your latest shows that you’ve organized, showcase your expertly laid out catering displays, or just show everyone how fun it is to book their wedding or party at your location. You can even use this feature as a call to action for bookings or appointments. It’s a great feature, and every local business should be taking advantage of posts to drive sales and outshine their competition.
